This workshop offers a practical, immersive introduction to Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for archaeological mapping and spatial analysis. Working in Old Cahawba’s lab and field settings, students will learn to collect, visualize, and interpret spatial data for CRM and public archaeology applications.

Foundational GIS concepts and archaeological use cases
Using QGIS for map design, data management, and analysis
Georeferencing historic maps and integrating field data
Field-based data collection and GPS integration
How to create polished, shareable archaeological maps
Participants will develop a mini GIS portfolio, including:
Maps of archaeological features, site layouts, etc.
Exported deliverables suitable for resumes or portfolios
Upon completion, participants will receive a formal certificate issued by the Alabama Historical Commission that can support:
Applications for CRM technician positions
Graduate school portfolios
University credit via independent study (where applicable)
